Intimate Maternity Session - Capturing The Beauty Of Motherhood
As a portrait photographer, I always feel so privileged to be a part of such special moments in people’s lives. I feel like there’s nothing quite as special as a maternity session, where I get to capture the beauty and excitement of pregnancy and motherhood.
Today, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful maternity session with a lovely Donna and her adorable baby boy. I chose a beautiful, and yet very simple studio setup with a grey muslin backdrop, a roll of tulle fabric on the floor and a tulle dress. I chose a neutral colour palette, with soft whites and creams, which created a sense of elegance and timelessness, which I absolutely love. I was very careful about the light placement. I didn’t want it to be faced directly at the mom, even though it was diffuse. I made sure to turn the light away from her and only allowed the softest light to fall off her from the very edge of the light modifier. This lighting was soft and dreamy, which helped to showcase the natural beauty of the mom-to-be.
One of the most beautiful and eye-catching elements of the setup was not only the mom herself and the lighting but also the dress that the client wore. It was a stunning handmade gown from Australia, which I purchased on Etsy a while ago. I used it in many of my maternity sessions, and it never disappoints. The dress features delicate tulle and intricate details that add a touch of glamour to the photos. It was the perfect choice for the fine art look that I was aiming for.
Once we had the setup ready, we started taking pictures. Donna was a natural in front of the camera, and she showed a sense of grace and beauty that was very much inspiring. The boy was also so great! Even though he couldn’t stay with the mom all the time and he was running away every 30 seconds, we were able to capture some beautiful and wholesome photos and let me tell you that a tablet with cartoons was a great help!
When I was editing the images, I made sure to enhance the natural beauty of the photos while still keeping a sense of authenticity and intimacy. I spent time in Lightroom and Photoshop, fine-tuning colours, tones, and textures to create a fine art look.
This was a very special and memorable maternity session. It was an honour to work with such a creative and talented client and to be a part of her journey toward motherhood.
